Curly Hair Tutorial: Tips, Tricks, + a How to Video

Raise your hand if you have naturally curly hair? The kind that if left alone to dry on its own takes on a new life! That is my hair in a nut shell. I rarely embrace my natural curls because I always feel like they are so overwhelming!! But the other day I decided to take the time to style them and got SO MANY comments and messages on my hair! You guys are the sweetest! So with all the questions coming in, I thought it would be helpful to do a quick tutorial on how I do it and what my go to products are for the best curly hair. Check out the video below as well as my highlighted tips!

MY BIGGEST CURLY HAIR TIPS

: AVOID TOWEL DRYING YOUR HAIR – When you get out of the shower, avoid towel drying or rubbing your hair. By avoiding this, you will start off with a LOT less frizz to deal with later!

: MORE CURLS > SCRUNCH!! LESS CURLS > FINGER COMB – If you have a LOT of natural curl where you feel like it gets out of control, finger comb through it when it is still wet and you are applying the mousse to separate the curls a little bit. If you want to boost your curls and help them look more curly scrunch like crazy with that mousse.

: REACH FOR A CREAM OVER A GEL – To avoid those overly crispy curls that look like they might break right off your head, reach for a cream like this one vs a gel.

: USE A DIFFUSER TO CONTROL WHERE YOU HAVE MORE VOLUME – When you dry your hair hook up that diffuser attachment. If you are trying to add more curl, diffuse up tighter to your head. Focus the diffuser on the section you want to create the most curl and volume, and avoid the areas that have enough on their own.

: PART YOUR HAIR AFTER YOU DRY IT TO KEEP THE VOLUME – Don’t worry about your part until you are done drying/diffusing your hair. By doing this you are boosting your volume while drying!

: RE-WET + DIFFUSE TO BRING IT BACK TO LIFE – When you get to day 3 or so and it starts to look fuzzy or frizzy, get that spray bottle out and rewet your hair. If needed you can diffuse it again to bring some life back to your curls or you can let it air dry.

MY MUST HAVE CURLY HAIR PRODUCTS

MOUSSE – This is my go to product for adding great volume without the weight of a thick gel. Like I show in the video, put it in your roots and scrunch it through to your ends. It helps give you more body and volume but still a light non crunchy hold.

BB DON’T BLOW IT THICK HAIR STYLER – This magic hair styler helps reduce frizz and define your curls without giving you that crispy curl. I love that there are 2 different options, one for thick hair and one for thin hair. It makes such a difference in the final look of your curls!

BLOW DRYER WITH DIFFUSER –This blow dryer has been my favorite for years and years. I love the ion settings that help control frizz (especially for curly hair). Pair it with this diffuser and you have the dream team for curly hair.

Valentine’s Day Gift Guide

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and I am so excited! It has always been one of my favorite holidays. What is better than celebrating love with the people you love?!

So I wanna know, when you were growing up, was Valentines Day a big deal in your house, or more of a holiday you just kind of had at school but that is it? What about in your current home? For me, when I was growing up, my mom made holidays so special for us. Valentine’s was no exception and I think that plays a big part in why I still love it so much today! So today I thought it would be fun to share one of our traditions + some simple Valentine’s Day gift ideas for the whole family!

The reason I loved it so much, is because of one special tradition. Every year we would make yummy treats + Valentine’s Cards so we could package them up for the neighbors. Instead of delivering them like a normal gift, we would doorbell ditch them with the little surprise. We LOVED it and thought it was the best thing ever as kids. Fast forward to my time as a parent bringing this tradition to my little family. I had NO IDEA this was not the norm. My naive self literally thought it was something everyone did for Valentines Day, and I couldn’t figure out why nobody ever did it to us in return!

My little people love it so much, that I had to keep the Valentines tradition alive, and I even do something similar for them. I package up a little gift, and some yummy treats and doorbell ditch them with their own Valentine’s Day surprises too! It has been so fun! You don’t have to make it over complicated or anything too fancy. In busier years we have delivered cookie dough or store bought cookies instead. Don’t complicate it, just have fun with it!!

Our Home: Boys Room

We are so excited to take you in for a better look at the boys room today! Even after the time we have lived here, I still am so happy with how it turned out, and the boys love it!!

When it came to designing this space, I wanted to keep it really simple + timeless. With the age gap between Hudson + Houston, I wanted the room to be able to fit both of them. I didn’t want anything too babyish, but also not too grown up, if that makes sense. We went with a pretty neutral pallet, and since blue is Hudson’s favorite color we added that in as well! As far as the beds go, we went with two twins instead of bunk beds. With Hudson being older, we figured he would have a later bed time, and didn’t want to have to worry about bed noises with him climbing in the same bed as Houston.

I also didn’t want any big bulky furniture or accessories. We went without a dresser in this space, because to me that is just more stuff to keep organized! All of their clothes are organized in the closet and most of the toys stay in our Playroom Closet.

Our Home: Girls Room

Today we are continuing on in our home tour with a look inside the girls room! I have been so excited to share this space with you! It is one of my favorite rooms in the house! The giant windows bring in so much light it makes for such a happy space! I’ve shared all the details into why we went with the design, plus a great hack to save some money, and some fun details below!

Like the rest of the home, I wanted to stick with a clean bright space in the girls room. The big windows bring in so much light, I didn’t want to take away from that with the design. I’ve always loved a clean and simple space, and didn’t want to invest a lot of money in a space I already had a design I loved. I carried pieces from the design from our old house over to this space, and freshened it up with new pillows and accessories.

We kept their old, inexpensive beds that still worked great for the space as the foundation for the room. In addition to those we used the “blank slate” the bedding gives, and spiced it up with pops of pink. I love how the art is soft but still brings a pop of color. The pink ties perfectly with the pillows and quilt. If we need a change, I can switch out pillows and a blanket and have a whole new look. So simple + a great way to save money!

Speaking of bedding, you’ll notice it is like the rest of the room, clean and simple. I didn’t want to add a lot of complicated accessories. Hayden is my most stubborn child, so I wanted making the bed to be quick and easy for her!! I also HAVE to tell you this little mom/design hack. To save a little money, for the white quilts on their beds, I actually bought a King instead of getting two twins! I just cut it in half and surged the end that I cut. It looks just like I bought two of the smaller size, but saved so much in the total cost!

I also wanted to make sure the room didn’t seem too girly or childish, since it is a space for both girls that have an age gap between them. With the age gap I wanted it to fit both of their styles and grow with them. I love that the nightstands from Rove are so functional but still add such a simple modern touch to the space, tying it all together.

Not only is this a favorite space for myself and the girls, but it has quickly become a favorite for the babies thanks to the swing. It has been such a fun touch for the room. They love it so much and could just sit and swing in it and look out the window all day.

5 Life Hacks for a more productive day

Anyone else feel like life is in constant busy stage of go go go. My to do lists seem to be multiplying even when I’m crossing things off!! I’ve started to notice that certain habits I’ve gotten into can really make or break my day when it comes to my productivity. Those few little tweaks that can make all the difference! So toady I thought I’d share 5 of my life hacks for a more productive day!

:: FIND YOUR TRIGGER HABIT

Have you ever heard of your trigger habit? I first heard about it from my friend Merrick and was super intrigued to learn more, and try to figure out if I really had one. If you don’t know what it is, the simplified definition is that one thing that changes your whole day, and causes a ripple effect to how it goes, and in turn how productive you are. It was so crazy to me, but the more I focused on it, I realized I really do have one. It is beyond simple, but for me it is making my bed. Seems a little nuts, but I swear it really does make or break my day. It starts my day off with a sense of accomplishment and order, and just knowing I have something checked off my list puts me in a better place and feeling productive from the start. It’s incredible how one little shift can somehow create the momentum to change so many parts of your day, your attitude, and your life.

:: GO TO BED WITH A CLEAN HOUSE

I don’t know about you, but waking up to a mess instantly puts me in a bad mood. When I take the time to pick up around the house before going to bed, I feel like I wake up ahead of the game, instead of with that on my to do list as soon as my eyes open. Just like making your bed, I love that it gives the day a fresh start and to me a clean house is a HAPPY house! It doesn’t need to be spotless everywhere, but putting in the effort to get at least the main area you will be in in the morning clean before bed makes all the difference in your attitude and how productive you are!

:: PREP WHAT YOU CAN THE NIGHT BEFORE

Preparing what you can the night before, instantly ups how productive your day will be. Again you are clearing things off your to do list to help the day run smoothly. For us this means getting backpacks ready, outfits picked out, and even some parts of lunches done. If you are heading into work, you can appl the same idea. Pick out your outfit the night before, have what you can of your breakfast ready to go. Anything you can do to simplify the morning rush will lead to a more productive day.

:: SLEEP MATTERS

For years and years I functioned off of 4-5 hours of sleep. Staying up late and then trying to start my day early. I am a firm believer if you can get 8 hours of sleep, you can do anything! My mind is clearer, I’m a nicer mom, and I have the energy to start my day off with a workout that always makes such a difference for me. A fresh well rested start = a more productive ( and HAPPY) day.

:: DESIGNATE YOUR TIME

Last but not least is to designate your time. Set aside specific times of day for work, for cleaning, for family etc. and do your best to focus on just that subject. Trying to balance both at the same time adds more stress and as much as i love to try to do it, multitasking usually results in low quality results. I want to give my full self to what I’m working on. If you are a stay at home mom, that does not mean you can’t schedule your day or use a planner. Designate a specific day for laundry, for groceries, for you time. It is ok and actually extremely helpful to schedule motherhood!

I know these are the simplest tips to being more productive. But for me they have been SUCH a game changer. It is the difference between feeling sluggish or like I can conquer the day! Figuring out little things we can change that make big impacts on our time and efficiency are what its all about in this parenting game, so I hope they are helpful! Our Home: Harper’s Nursery

Knowing Harper is our last baby has been such a different experience. I think for us, it has reminded us to enjoy every little minute since these will be our last “baby firsts”. When it came to designing Harper’s Nursery, I really wanted to savor every minute. I knew it was the last little nursery I’d be creating. So I really wanted it to be a place I loved that I could soak up allll the baby goodness in. If you remember in our California home I had my sweet friend, Annalisa from Oilo Studio help me help put her creative touch on the space. She’s amazing + her eye for modern baby design is out of this world. I could not be happier with how it turned out!

If you’ve been here for a while, you probably saw that we originally designed Harper’s Nursery in the tiny rental. I love that I was able to take that same design, and transform it into her current space. The new house is also full of big bright windows, which we love. However, that light does come as a downfall when it comes to nap time. We were beyond thrilled to get our new blinds in from Park City Blinds. I love that we can still enjoy that bright happy light during play time, but she can sleep peacefully once they are down.

I think my favorite thing about Harper’s Nursery is the rug, and by the amount of direct messages I get about it, I think it is yours too! haha! I can’t say enough good about it, or the other details in the room from Serena + Lily. Every single piece from them I own is such high end quality. I just love the way they can pull a space together and be the finishing touch it needs.

I am so happy that we decided to add a bathroom as part of Harper’s Nursery space. It probably seems like overkill now when she is just little, but it has actually been so convenient for easy clean up. We love knowing she can grow into the space instead of out of it so quickly, and if we decide to convert it to a guest room or for one of the big kids, it is still super functional.

Setting Goals for 2021

I can’t believe another year has already gone by! 2020 was a wild one for all of us, but I still can’t believe we are back in January! A new year usually brings new goals. People seem to have a love hate relationship with goal setting. I personally love setting goals, but with that being said, I try to keep them very simple and realistic so I am not instantly setting myself up for failure/disappointment. I love hearing others goals, so today I’m teaming up with Walmart to share a few of mine for 2021.

BE HEALTHY

Fitness goals tend to get a bad rap lately. Losing weight and diets are often associated with the new year, but I like to take a different approach. My goal is to BE HEALTHY. For me that means maintaining what I’ve worked hard for over the last few years, and keep up my routine. Eating healthy, regular movement, and mental health as well. To add a little bit of a fun challenge to it, my girlfriend challenged me to join in on her 100 pushups in 2021 goal to, so I am going to give that a whirl! Wish me lucky!

And side note while we are talking healthy living! The other day on my dms’s I showed a little clip taking my vitamins and got so many messages asking what I take and where I get them, so I thought it would be super helpful to link them all here since I know a lot of people are trying to get on a healthy track as well. I honestly had no idea how many options there were until I saw Walmart’s new Wellness Hub when I was ordering my weekly groceries. It is super convenient to shop all your wellness needs in a one stop shop from healthier foods through grocery pickup/delivery, to self care and vitamins!

ONE ON ONE TIME

We were doing so well with this before Covid, and then with everyone being home, being able to separate that one on one time with each kid kind of fizzled out. I am making this a big goal this year for me because I notice such a difference in both myself and my kids attitudes and our relationship.

SERVE MORE

Another goal we have as a family this year is to serve more together. There are so many opportunities to serve around us that we overlook because we try to make it too hard. We served at a local place that feeds the homeless before Christmas and loved it. This year we are getting things on the schedule and trying harder to make it happen monthly!

MANAGE SCREEN TIME BETTER

Spending less time on my phone has been a goal for years, but i don’t feel like I have ever really accomplished it or got where I wanted to, because my phone is my job. So my assistant and I talked about it, and we really want to push it this year. We have planned a designated down time from 3-8 of no work stuff AT ALL. I think knowing we are on the same page and not expecting work related things during those hours will make a big difference .

MAKE MY BED

I know this one seems so simple, but it makes the biggest difference in my day. I feel like it starts me off being productive and always leads to a better day and outlook on the day!

Our Home: Gym Reveal

The gym is finally done and fully functional!! Hallelujah! I shared a little peek of it the other day when I was going to workout, and had so many questions on sources, design process, and everything in between. So I thought it would be fun to take you on a little gym tour today + share how we made our dream a reality, plus share a quick and easy at home workout!

As most of you already know, we designed our own house plans. From how many shelves in every closet, to how much space we wanted in the bathrooms, we were very meticulous over allll the details. Our biggest goal was to have no wasted space. At the time we were designing, fitness wasn’t a huge priority to me. I was still more in the taking care of babies phase. Fitness just wasn’t at the top of my list. So fitting it in to our home wasn’t top priority either. But fast forward to now, and Health + Fitness has become a huge priority to Joe and I. We work out daily and crave that mental clarity and physical push. So we decided to add a home gym!

To be honest, I was still concerned how much we would use it, because I regularly get my workouts in at F45. But it has been a game changer and we absolutely love it, and not necessarily for the reasons I thought. First of all, it has brought our family closer together. Joe and I will go spend time together working out, and pretty soon we will have the kids follow and want to exercise too. I love that they have been able to see our example and want to get stronger and healthier too.

Now let’s talk build. We didn’t want this to be a crazy expensive process. So we did a ton of research on every little thing. Joe was able to figure out that it was something he and my brother in law Trapper could build themselves on days off, saving money there. The family all pitched in to paint. We didn’t heat or air condition the space to save money. Instead we just have a portable unit from Costco that works great. We really wanted to do everything we could to get the most bang for our buck.

When it came to the design, we really wanted it to be a compliment to our home, especially to our style. That meant keeping things very minimal and clean. Every single piece of equipment and flooring was researched over for months. We wanted to be sure we were investing in quality items we would use. You’ll see that the weight system we have is not big and bulky. It is very minimal and can be easily moved out of the way. I just love that it is a clean slate so the sky is the limit with what workout you do.

2020: BEST OF AMAZON

Is there a better duo than quarantine shopping and Amazon?? If there was one thing that was a constant in this rollercoaster of a year it was my love for Amazon! While my usual purchases used to be made up of more toys and home gadgets, 2020 introduced me to more of Amazon Fashion and I was not disappointed with what I found!! So today we are continuing on with our BEST OF 2020 posts with a round up of the BEST OF AMAZON!

First up on the BEST OF AMAZON was this amazing puff sleeve top! I found a super similar option on another site for close to $100 and just couldn’t pull the trigger. I decided to just see what I could find on Amazon and was so pleasantly surprised by this one. The fit is super flattering, the sleeve adds some fun but is not overwhelming, and you can’t beat the price of $25!! And bonus, the white is not see through at all!

This look was another favorite and was a complete Amazon find from head to toe. I don’t know about you, but I am glad 2020 convinced me to go for the biker shorts trend, because I never want to go back!! This pair has pockets which pretty much makes them sell themselves!! I also love the length and that they don’t ride up! And this sweatshirt is as cozy as they come! Super flattering with biker shorts or paired with jeans.

I think it is safe to say just about everyones screen time went up in 2020, and blue light glasses were in high demand! Mine save me from crazy headaches and I can’t live without them. I have 2 pairs I rotate between (both linked above). I love the shape of them and of course the price tag!

This bracelet making kit is 100% Houston’s favorite thing of 2020. I knew the girls would love it but he shocked me and is still going strong making so many little bracelets months later. It is definitely a fun one for all ages.

Two words for you…celery juice! How many of you jumped on the bandwagon? As absolutely disgusting as it is, the health benefits are pretty amazing to not make it worth it. And this baby makes it super easy to do. My kids actually love juicing for me!

My current 24 degrees is really making me wish I was somewhere warm wearing this dress. It was one of my personal favorite Amazon finds this year! Super light weight and breathable, covers your religion, and just perfect for those summer days!

Is there anything cuter than mini sized things? I about died when I found these tiny Dr. Marten dupes for Harper!! They are only $25 and amazing quality!

If the new year has you ready to make some new healthy life choices, you need these booty bands in your life!! I have tried so many different options, and these are incredible. They are in my opinion, the best “equipment” to have for your at home workout, because they are perfect for travel, variety, and they take up no space!

Does it bug you as much as me that something as simple as flip flops can be so dang expensive?! When we went to Mexico I was on the hunt to find some cute, good quality options that didn’t break the bank and AMAZON pulled through. Hunter and I both loved these!! And only $13!!!

Next up in our 2020 fashion roundup is my go to favorite coat. If you are always freezing, but hate feeling like a giant marshmallow, this is the coat for you. So dang flattering and comfortable, but actually keeps you warm too!! Comes in a few different cute colors and is worth every penny! I sized up to make room for layering.

These sunglasses were also a constant question we got and for good reason. Classic black, timeless style, that goes with everything!

You all love a great basic as much as I do, which is why these jeans + top were next on the list! Both so flattering, great quality and super affordable!

Next up were these three summer staples. This basic tee may be one of my favorite finds of 2020. Under $10 and just such a great basic. And the sneakers! I thought they were too good to be true, but they are worth every penny. And it won’t be very many because they only $17!

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale brought us this outfit made up of the perfect basics. This top is so good I have it in 3 colors. It is so flattering, perfect for layering, and something so versatile and classic for years to come.

And don’t get me started on the jeans! They have been in my top rotation for years! The distressing is perfectly placed, the fit squeezes you in but is so comfy, and I just love them!!

This dress was another surprise fashion find of 2020! I did a Target try on haul a few months ago and was thrilled with this find. Comes in quite a few fun colors. I love that it is so versatile to dress up or down and under $20!

I was not surprised at all that this hat made the 2020 bests in fashion. It for sure made my top buys!! So versatile, classic color, and a comfortable fit. You can snag it in your favorite team too!

This bomber jacket also made the list. I’ve had it for 2 years now and love it just as much today. It is reversible so it is actually two in one. The fit is so cute and looks great dressed up or down!

Last but not least, are these overalls! You know I love something if I get it in multiple colors and these are just that. They feel like pajamas, but are stylish enough to wear out too.

New Year’s Eve: All Dressed up and nowhere to go!

Does it even feel real that 2020 is finally almost coming to an end? I know I am not alone in saying it was one of the most turbulent roller coaster years of my life! Normally, with New Year’s Eve being so close to the rush and fun of the Christmas Holiday, I like to think ahead about our plans and get things figured out. But in true 2020 fashion, there still isn’t going to be a lot of going out…or wearing of this dress! HA! But since loungewear was basically 2020’s biggest sponsor, I thought it would be fitting to do a roundup of my favorite sets that would be perfect to help you ring in the new year in comfort + style!

I think it is safe to say this set was my hero of 2020. It was probably the most worn outfit in my closet, because it is just that good. I love that it feels like you are wearing pajamas, but is cohesive enough to wear out as well. If you follow along on Instagram you know of my love for it by how many colors I own it in! Ha!

Another favorite knit style option is this one. It was my first “quarantine wardrobe” purchase and one I don’t regret. Again I love relaxed and comfortable it is, but can easily still be worn out and not look like you are wearing pajamas. You can shop it for 50% off now too!

:: JOGGER STYLE SETS

If you know me, you know I live for a good jogger. Basically 2020 was my year to shine because I am the queen of loungewear and all things comfy!! I love a good jogger set because for the most part it is a more fitted look. It is easy to throw on a hat and sneakers and be out the door, but again is so comfortable for around the house. Retailers everywhere really stepped up their game in the jogger set department so I have lots of affordable favorites!

:: BIKER SHORTS

Last but not least is the underdog and new comer to loungewear, the biker shorts. They came right back from the 80’s/90’s ready to shine this year and were instantly so popular. I was SO glad to see it was the longer version that really shined and have a few pairs I absolutely love!!

For colder fall temps, I love to pair them with a baggier sweatshirt. It balances out fine with the fitted shorts and still looks put together but so dang comfortable!!

More for the warmer temps, but equally as comfortable is this biker and oversized tee set. Comes in a bunch of colors and like I love is so versatile!
